Dr. Vera Zurbrügg is a Swiss artist, researcher and curator based in Basel. In her practice, she challenges dominant narratives to unpack the ideological foundations of historical knowledge production. Working with photography, film, objects, and material interventions, she examines notions of mnemonic absence to analyse the impact of state secrecy on collective memory. Vera focuses on the potential of artistic approaches and documentary practices to address knowledge gaps created by archival structures, political rhetoric and algorithmic governance; themes she further researches and teaches at CML.
These interests are also central in her work as a co-founder of RAKE, a research collective that utilises open-source data to visualise a variety of unseen and obscured elements in society, business, and politics; and irrelevant encounters, a format she co-founded with Mireia Ludevid i Llop to explore current narratives, memories, and perspectives deemed irrelevant.
